The Health Council

The purpose of the Health Council is to raise the awareness the church community in holistic concepts of health and the relationship between faith and health. To achieve this, the council develops the programs and activities of the health and healing ministry. These include regular "Health and Wellness" events on topics relevant to the congregation and community. Special services are planned at Christmas, for those who find Christmas a difficult time and for the Celebration of the Feast of St. Luke. An important function of the council is to support the work of the parish nurse.

Parish Nursing Ministry

This ministry serves those who see the Cathedral as their primary place of worship, those who look to the Cathedral for help in times of need and difficulty and our community outreach programs.   The church is a unique setting for health promotion, education, and disease prevention. The role of the parish nurse is to work towards an intentional health and healing ministry in the church. As a member of the ministerial team, her goal is to promote the church as a community health place. This is achieved by connecting the healing resources of our faith and church with the professional knowledge and skills of a nurse. True health and wholeness comes with the integration of the physiological, psychological, sociological dimension with spirituality. This connection of health and faith finds its roots in the nursing profession itself and the history of the church.

The largest population-based health study ever attempted is taking place in Ontario, and you are invited to be part of it. It is expected that over 300,000 people will eventually contribute to this initiative. The Ontario Health Study, which is funded by the federal and Ontario governments, will help medical researchers to understand the causes, prevention and treatment of diseases such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease and Alzheimer's. Data covering many diseases from such a large number of people will lead to conclusions that are more meaningful. It is hoped that participants will be followed for their whole life, giving insight into the roles played by environment, lifestyle and genes, in health and illness.

Anyone at least 18 years of age is welcome to be part of the study, regardless of your current state of health. Privacy safeguards are strictly followed. Once you register online, you are required to complete a questionnaire which takes about 30 minutes. Optional follow-up questionnaires and studies, or a visit to an assessment office, could also be offered.

This is an easy way to contribute to knowledge that will provide a healthier future for all of us in Ontario. For more information, and to register for the study, go to www.ontariohealthstudy.ca.
