The Cathedral Guild of Change Ringers

The bells are rung regularly each Sunday morning between 10-11:00 am and for practice on Monday evenings between 6:00 and 9:00 pm. They are rung by members of the St. James' Cathedral Guild of Change Ringers. The Guild numbers approximately 25 persons of all ages.

The Guild's officers are:

  • Tower Captain: Robin Clarke
  • Deputy Tower Captain: Madeleine Cheesman
  • Ringing Master: David Hawkins
  • Secretary: Nick Cheesman
  • Treasurer: Chris Ruch
  • Steeple Keeper: Michael Hinton
  • Archivist: Ruth Smith
  • Librarian: Henrietta Walmark
We frequently welcome ringing visitors from around the world. On two or three occasions each year, well known 12 bell ringing bands will visit to ring a "Peal". A peal is continuous ringing of 5000 changes or more and takes approximately 3 hrs 15 mins on our bells. Generally these occasions will be publicized as the ringing is of excellent quality and music.

Monday, October 31, 2011

Members of the Ancient Society of College Youths (ASCY) will be coming to Toronto to ring the Bells of Old York at the Cathedral. The Society, founded in 1637, is based in London, but there are members in many countries of the world.

In recognition of the international membership, the current Master of the Society, Philip Goodyer, an Australian and the first non-British Master of the Society, set himself the goal of arranging and ringing a peal at the best rings of 12-bells in each country where members are resident. The Toronto visit is the last leg of the round-the-world venture.

The band is mostly from the UK and North America, the method to be rung is Cambridge Surprise Maximus and ringing is due to start soon after 1:00pm and will last approximately 3.5 hours. This is a great opportunity to hear ringing of the highest quality and will be best heard in St James Park. After the peal, many of the band will join members of the St James Guild at their practice before rushing to the airport for their flights home.
