Gays, Lesbians & Friends

As a symbol of God's presence and love in our city, St. James' Cathedral provides a place of sanctuary and worship within the fullness of the liturgical tranditions of the Anglican Church offering all people generous hospitality, healing and hope with a respect for the diversity of God's people.

Within this context, Gays, Lesbians & Friends strives to build an all-inclusive community that embraces Christian values and spirituality.

Our Vision

  • To live, work, act and pray for the Christian community as a place of peace, freedom and inclusion where love between people, regardless of sexual orientation may be honoured, shared and celebrated;
  • To fulfil the baptismal covenant that declares that all people are full and equal members of the Body of Christ;
  • To be a resource for spiritual growth and social change, and a welcoming beacon of Christian hope;
  • To be a place to discuss relevant issues, serve the Church, learn our history and create a future.

OUT LATE
A documentary about five individuals who made the courageous and life-altering decision to come out as gay, lesbian or transgendered after the age of 55, proving it's never too late to be yourself. An earlier generation gains power and freedom.

Friday, November 11, 2011
A FINISHED LIFE
Follows the "Goodbye and no regrets tour" of Greg Gour, a 48-year-old gay man with AIDS who, when given six months to live, takes the road trip of his life. Reflective, powerful and heart-breaking. (We will also remember those who gave their lives for our freedom on this Remembrance Day).

HISTORY LESSONS
An irreverent film tracing lesbian history through archival footage that playfully manipulates it to appear as though lesbians were everywhere. Lesbians are often overlooked in a world of gay men. Here we get to look at the women's side of our story.

Friday, November 25, 2011
STONEWALL UPRISING
A documentary exploring the dramatic event that launched a worldwide rights movement. Told by those who took part, from drag queens and hustlers to police detectives, journalists and a former mayor of new York, with a rich trove of archival footage. How GLBT persons arrived at where we are today, produced by PBS.

I HAVE A DREAM / MISSISSIPPI BURNING
A reflective double-feature evening with a short documentary of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr's momentous speech and archival footage of the civil rights movement he founded. Then followed by the dramatic film where three civil rights workers disappear and spark one of the most explosive murder investigations in history. A serious look at the dark side of discrimination.
